In all of my discussions with people over whether or not to eat organic, there are two primary arguments that tend to arise. I will discuss the first one here: Cost. One of the first things people bring up is that buying organic is pricey...but is this really true? Let's answer this question first by understanding what you are buying.
What is 'Organic'?
The word Organic is an umbrella term referencing food that that is produced by alternative methods. This all-encompassing term tends to include food raised without antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, chemicals, pesticides, etc...There is additional terminology that can be included such as: free-range, pasture-raised, Non-GMO...there are also additional governing bodies you will see noted on labels such as: USDA Certified Organic or Non-GMO Project Verified.
Generally, the less ingredients it takes to make something, the healthier it is for you. You may have heard the phrase: If it didn't have a mother, and it didn't come from the ground...don't eat it. No truer words can be said.
So is buying organic more expensive?
Yes - but only initially.
Produce, pre-packaged foods, dairy and meats tend to cost more than other grocery items. Why? Because it takes more effort to grow or raise organic. Pesticides have done wonders for keeping bugs off of produce, but the unintended side effect is that we now ingest produce that has been raised with exposure to these toxic compounds.
To meet the needs of the booming population and growing appetites, some farmers have turned to growth hormones and steroids to "beef up" their meat or dairy production. Again, the aim is to meet quantity demands...not quality, and there are unintended consequences for both the animals and us.
This is why we pay more for organic; but this is only true when you are starting out. Once you have committed to the shift that occurs when cleaning up your diet, and your body adjusts to a diet predominantly or wholly made up of organic or 'clean' foods, something amazing happens!
Your stomach size shrinks - because you are eating more foods that are not heavily processed and do not contain empty calories, your stomach shrinks back to a normal size. Processed (AKA 'fake') foods contain ingredients that do not break down normally, if at all, and they contain ingredients that tend to cause a lot of bloating and swelling of the stomach.
Because your stomach size shrinks and because you are now eating more nutrient dense food, you need a smaller quantity. Because you need a smaller quantity, buying organic is no longer more expense than before. Additionally, likely you are saving significantly more than you were before because you are eating out less.
Our bodies were created to eat certain things. Our diets today are not reflective of what our bodies were made to process. Take a good hard look at your grocery & eat out budgets and your over-all diet. If you cannot pronounce the ingredients, or if there are too many, consider buying something else. If you really want to improve your health, the best way to start is to begin the process of making the switch to a more organic or clean diet. It will not only benefit your over-all health, but your wallet in the long run!
