One of the biggest tools I utilize for helping my clients is the food diary. It is a beautiful thing...we don't realize how much of what we are actually eating everyday until we start breaking things down and keeping track.
If you had asked me how my diet was, my immediate response was that it was good...better than ever. This was true, I wasn't lying, but as a good friend of mine always says, "You just don't know what you don't know."
The beauty of a food diary is two-fold:
1) It shows you what you are actually eating, removing the possibility of flawed interpretation. By breaking it down to the levels that are so easily overlooked, such as calories, sugar, sodium, carbohydrates and fat, we can easily determine areas to improve in our diet. These are the important components that, due to overconsumption, so negatively impact so much of American life.
2) It forces you to be more aware, therefore be more likely to make better choices! Once you have seen exactly what you are eating, and how it is impacting your health, keeping this regular food diary will help you be more cognizant of what you are eating. Be it weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, inflammation, intestinal issues or other health concerns...you can now see clearly what to avoid and make better choices.
Thanks to nutritional value menu's, you can still eat out! You will learn so much about the things you are eating and be able to either avoid them, or choose to eat them in moderation...either less frequently, or just eating less of it in one sitting.
So start keeping tabs on your diet on your way to better health; this will be one diary you won't want to neglect!
