Toilet Paper in a Pinch

As if one run on TP was not enough in 2020...here comes round two. I don’t know why there is such a focus on toilet paper. To me, having enough food to eat for an extended period of time is much more of a priority, but when people get fearful they don’t necessarily think rationally.

And certainly there is a bit of psychology to all of this. When people are told that there is a “shortage” of something, many of them inevitably feel motivated to run out and buy some too while they still can. The panic buying has reached such a frenzy that many large chains are once again starting to put purchase limits on certain items and greeting customers with the foreboding empty shelf.

If we have learned anything from 2020, it should be to: expect the unexpected and plan ahead. My sincere hope is that you do have a supply of toilet paper already stashed away in your home; hopefully you took advantage of the last few relatively well-stocked months. If you did not, and you are running low on turd-tickets, never fear!

Here is something most of us can do right now to assuage any effects that a TP shortage may have on you and your family: reusable toilet paper!! Really, I would recommend using primarily for urinating, assuming you are ahead of the game enough to have a supply of actual toilet paper. Using rags for urination would really prolong the life of your paper supply. You can use for both #1 and #2 , however, washing to reuse would be a lot easier and more sanitary for #1 only.

Most of us have an old T-shirt or old bed sheet...something that doesn't fit, doubles as a shop rag or is covered with stains or riddled with holes...Cut that sucker up and others and keep a stash by the toilet, as well as a small garbage can to throw them in for washing. Bam! It doesn't have to be pretty...you do not have to use fancy scissors or sew a border. Just cut up some cloth! Your bum will thank you! An old shirt or sheet is much better than playing guess the leaf or dragging yourself across the lawn.

Keep working ahead...things are not likely to return to the normal we are yearning for. Work to become more self-sufficient and stocked at home. Look at unconventional stores for things you cannot find at your local big-chain grocery store. Keep a good sense of humor and help others!

As always, feel free to pass along...and happy wiping!
